Bandipur National Park India
The Bandipur National Park India is located in the south Indian state of Karnataka, amidst the soaring Western Ghat Mountains on the Mysore-Ooty highway. The vegetation cover of Bandipur National Park India comprises of a mix of deciduous forests, evergreen forests and scrub, much of which has been endowed by the rapidly flowing waters of the Moyar River. The scrub forests that dot this park mainly consist of stunted trees, bushes and vast, open grassy patches. Towards the northwestern part of this park, the vegetation cover changes from dry deciduous forests to tropical mixed deciduous forests.
Major wildlife species found in Bandipur National Park India include the Asian elephant, gaur (a type of bull), sambhar, chital, mouse deer, four horned antelope, wild pig, barking deer, wild boar, jackal, sloth bear, panther, Malabar squirrel, red-giant squirrel, black naped hare and the Indian porcupine. According to the recent most estimates, over 1,900 elephants reside in this park.
Though a majority of tourists who come to this park are drawn to see its large herds of Asiatic elephant, very few know that Bandipur National Park India is also home to a large number of tigers. According to the latest records, approximately 66 tigers inhabit the dense forests of Bandipur National Park.
The Bandipur National Park India does not fail to delight the bird watchers either who come to this park. You can spot shaheen falcon, the honey buzzard, king vulture, Peafowl, the grey jungle fowl, red spur fowl, grey partridge, cormorants, ducks, herons, teals and waders in this park. Some of the commonly sighted woodland birds found here are the crested hawk eagle, serpent eagle, the collared scops owl, the yellow-legged green pigeon, parakeets, woodpeckers and barbets, hornbills, drongos and diverse warblers.
