If you were enthralled after reading Salim Ali’s books it is time to have a first hand experience in the Keoladeo Ghana National Park, India which is the biggest bird sanctuary in India. Popularly known as the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary this reserve is famous for a number of migratory and resident birds. There are 380 different birds in this region each unique in its own way. Apart from the birds the Keoladeo Ghana National Park, India is home to striped hyaenas, golden jackals, Nilgais, Blackbucks, wild boars, golden jackals and sambars.

Although the Keoladeo Ghana National Park, India was started long ago by the king of Bharatpur with the intention of providing a habitat for the migratory birds it was listed as a National Park only in 1981. The peculiar name of Keoladeo comes from the temple which is popular among the devotees of Lord Shiva. Every year thousands of migratory birds fly from as far as Central Asia and Siberia in search of a warm place for breeding. A variety of birds like pelicans, geese, shanks, eagles, pelicans, warblers, buntings, larks, wheaters, pipits visit the Keoladeo Ghana National Park, India every year during the winter.

You just have to carry a binocular with you so that you do not miss the golden opportunity of spotting some of the beautiful birds of the region. A walk through the well-demarcated forest trail leads to the lake which is always covered with the feathered animals. The best time to catch the birds is in the morning or during the dusk when they fly back to their respective nests.
